    The smell may also remind one of the old-fashioned, gray plasticine modelling clay we used to have in elementary school in the 1950s and 60s. Those of us who loved our art class and supplies could be quite fond of it. Oil based stuff has a distinctive characteristic smell that attaches to pleasant experience just as much as the aroma of baking bread.

  • @manthasagittarius1

    A fine review, and I've been using these and can agree with everything. Two things I specifically agree with: the pencils do smell quite strong, and you could dislike it and find it hard to tolerate, but I like it for sentimental reasons, as my dad used to do house painting as a sideline when I was small, when most work was still done with oil based paints, and I liked to go with him and watch him work. 🤗 More seriously, I take exception to the use "insurpassably" lightfast. Insurpassable implies pretty clearly that there might be an equal, but no one can do any better, and that is simply not true. The observation about the early inflation of price, well, that is true too in my own experience, and not very commendable. So I think you are right in all respects. These are lovely for the developing artist, rich colors, thick nice texture and good performance. Not enough for the professional, but great for a hobbyist or maybe someone who digitalizes their work commercially and doesn't need long life.

    This fox does seem what these pencils were made for . . . it's wonderful how rich and dimensionally solid it looks, and yet what fine detail you get. It wouldn't have that lifelike sharp expression and sensation of movement otherwise. Beautiful work.

    A really humble suggestion I use to keep my round pencils on the slightly angled table: I pinch off a small blob of Blu-Tac and roll it into a strip, then wrap it tight round the barrel of the pencil near the top and flatten it a bit. Keeps it from rolling, and comes right off with no trace.

    I noticed on this demo that the lighter pastel mat kind of kept the colour more saturated after applying the OMS … the other demo of the dog ( terrier) the sand colour & white looked washed out . Gorgeous pic though

    • @ClaudiaSketches
      @ClaudiaSketches 3 місяці тому

      A fantastic and thought-provoking comment! Thank you for watching. :) I'm not sure that this directly has so much to do with the pastelmat colour, but more the fact that the pencils I used for the Australian Terrier had much more white pigment in the mix. White pigment has a habit of "disappearing" when blended out with solvents, but becomes more opaque again once the solvents dry. But you are certainly right that transparent colours will appear more luminous on brighter/whiter papers! And by extension this means that I'd use less white in mixes for paler colours when colouring on white/light paper, instead using more transparent colours or less pencil in the layers to achieve pale colours.

    Great review. I'm rather confused as to what THE absolute best budget coloured pencil brand out there is? There's such a myriad of brands. Any suggestion? Thanks.

    • @ClaudiaSketches
      @ClaudiaSketches 3 місяці тому

      Hi! I'm sorry, that's a really tough question to give a simple answer because there's so many factors at play! E.g. location can affect price and availability significantly, if open-stock purchasing is important to you, personal preference etc. As a very rough guide, I'd personally stick to a product that isn't marketed towards kids or as school supplies, created by art brands that have been around for a while, and that have colour information on the packaging. I think these things help to ensure a brand that cares about the product they're putting out, as well as a reasonable level of wood quality (important for sharpening/breakage) and colour pay-off. There are lots of really good products out there these days! I'd also follow some art groups on social media to find out what other people are using - this way you can see the qualities of a product in action. Sorry that I can't give you a specific answer, but I hope that you're content with whatever you end up buying :)

    Very impressive as a tutorial. The differences are clear between the two likenesses, but also somewhat subtle and hard to see for someone who is still going on the usual way human cognition operates: generalizations good enough to function, but not so invested in detail as to cost extra time or effort. You do a great job of identifying just what needs to be slowed down and seen again for accuracy over perceptive "efficiency." Sure goes some distance toward a genuine portrait likeness of someone's individual cat, too!

    Making art is not tracing , to be an artist you need to draw, tracing is the same as color by numbers, you don’t learn anything from tracing, did you think that the great artists traced ? Tracing is good for amateurs, who wants to color, but don’t say you’re an artist, you are a colorist, big difference

    Actually I understand that pencils in a given range have different lightfastness, because that depends on the pigment, i. e. the colour. What I do NOT understand is that Derwent does not offer a "lightfast set", because a look at Derwent's colour chart shows that even in the yellows and reds there are a few lightfast option (gold, flesh pink and madder carmine have 8 or 6.) Great butterfly and thanks for the review!

I already have a good understanding of values and the way light hits fur and gives it its shadows and highlights but for whatever reason proportions are the biggest issue for me as an artist and it always has been since i first started making art as a kid. Im going to try to think more critically about spacing now. Great video!

    How do u know which side of the board to use? I bought it in white and both sides feel the same. Neither sides are gritty feeling like the pastelmat paper

    • @ClaudiaSketches
      @ClaudiaSketches 6 місяців тому

      It's unusual that both sides feel identical - it shouldn't, unless there is a defect. Is it possible that a sheet of glassine (crystal paper) is laying over the top that makes both sides feel glossy? One side of the pastelmat card should feel slick/glossy (the back) whilst the other should have a very slightly coarse texture (the front). If that doesn't clear up anything, I'd try a pencil on the corner of both sides. It's worth noting that the white is a lot smoother than the other colours.

    • @sgraham4533

    I have the 72 sets in both the Derwent watercolour pencils and the Inktense. I often dip my watercolour pencil tips in water as well as take colour off the tip with the brush. I always make sure I hang them upside down afterwards and give them plenty of time for the wood to dry before putting them away. Just like you would for a brush. I’ve never had any problems with the wood cracking as a result. ❤
